Letting Go

When I took Gem out at 6 a.m., it was overcast and cool and felt like fall. But the sun is out now. It will probably be another muggy August day. I'm ready for the cooler days of fall. It's been a hot summer.

Yesterday, I woke up and felt like something had lifted. I've been absolutely beside myself lately about the growing antisemitism in our city and the state of our country. It's been hard to sleep or think of anything else. But I'm writing songs now-- have one finished and two more in the works. I'm working on collages too, and seeing friends. The obsession seems to have lifted. I wish the problems had resolved too, but they haven't, and may not for a long time. It's important to continue to make art and see friends and keep your head above water.

Today, I'll have lunch with my niece Chloe in the East Village. Looking forward to seeing her and hearing her news. She moved to Boston for a job and I don't get to see her as much. Unbelievably, she'll turn 26 in September. She was accepted into a big comic art fair and, I'm sure, will share the details with me. I'll pretend her mother hasn't already mentioned it because Chloe hates when her mother reveals her news and secrets.  Mothers and daughters have a complicated time at this age. I didn't get along with my own mother until I was almost fifty. It's hard to believe because we have become good friends. But it was hard going for years, especially during my teenage into young adult years. It's hard for mothers to let go and for daughters to forgive.
