Darling, there is grey in my hair

I've always enjoyed keeping a blog. Before that, there were notebooks. I kept one for all the years of my teens, twenties, and thirties too. Does anyone keep a notebook anymore? They were company. I suppose the way phones are now. I had an ongoing conversation with myself, worrying all my plans and decisions to death. Too much ink was spent on trying to understand and mitigate the anxiety and depression I suffered then, especially in my twenties. More was spent on the ill-fated love affairs and endless pursuit of unavailable men.

Also, the notebooks were  fodder for song lyrics. Because of course I was always working on music. While writing the lyrics for the seven new songs, on Sing to the Ghosts, I turned to my notebooks again. It was helpful to get away from a screen, to see the words on a page. Are the songs better, worse? I have no idea. They are a true expression of where I am now, at this age, during this time.
