Watching the Snow Come Down

Well, it's the first snow storm of the season, here in New York. I'm watching it fall outside my window and settle heavily on the branches of the maple tree. So beautiful. I took Gem out earlier and she was not loving it-- it's a wet snow and the sidewalks are icy. She's a good dog and quickly did her business, then we hurried back inside.

Now I'm (mostly not) listening to the radio in the kitchen, drinking coffee, and thinking about the cruelty of human beings. Two mass shootings in the headlines this morning. What is wrong with us? Our species, I mean. We have the capability to be kind and caring, yet also to hate so deeply. I suppose other species can be violent and cruel as well. Other mammals, primarily, although I've seen sparrows fighting. I think aging-- getting old I mean-- relieves a person of many petty grievances and resentments. Experience softens the heart. Maybe you have to want this for it to happen though, because there are certainly plenty of exceptions. Powerful men seem less willing to engage in the necessary introspection.

Snow continues to fall as I write this. Whenever it snows, I get messages from people who are listening to my song “Snow Come Down.” Isn't that wonderful? It gives my life meaning to be connected to people through my work.
